Senior Football: Catholic Cup Final Thriller Ends in Heartbreak

The Catholic Cup Final delivered a spectacle worthy of the occasion, as St Ignatius College's senior football team battled fiercely against St Thomas More in a dramatic contest that swung relentlessly from one side to the other. Featuring a combined squad of Year 11 to Year 13 students, the match was a showcase not only of talent but of resilience, determination, and school pride. The game began with St Thomas More asserting themselves early and breaking through to take a 1–0 lead in the first 15 minutes, finishing confidently and placing immediate pressure on the Ignatius side. Despite the early setback, the response from our senior boys was commendable. The team gradually settled into the match, finding rhythm in midfield and beginning to stretch their opponents. Their persistence paid off as Ignatius levelled the score at 1–1, bringing renewed energy to both the players and the supporters. However, just as it seemed momentum had shifted, St Thomas More struck again in the closing moments of the first half. A well-timed attack caught us off guard, restoring their advantage and sending them into the break 2–1 ahead. The second half opened in the worst possible way for us as St Thomas More scored quickly after the restart, extending their lead to 3–1 and appearing to take firm control of the contest. At this stage, many might have expected the game to slip away but our senior team had other ideas. Demonstrating impressive character, the team refused to concede defeat. They fought back with conviction, applying sustained pressure and creating opportunities. Their efforts were rewarded with a crucial second goal, narrowing the deficit and reigniting belief. With time ticking away, we continued to press, and our determination culminated in a dramatic equaliser to make it 3–3 by full time. The closing minutes of playing time provided one of the match’s most contentious moments. Ignatius thought they had completed a remarkable comeback with a late winning goal, only for celebrations to be cut short by the assistant referee’s flag for offside. With tensions high and emotions running deep, the match proceeded into extra time. Despite both teams pushing for a decisive breakthrough, extra time yielded no further goals. Fatigue began to show, yet the commitment from both sides never wavered. Ultimately, the final would be decided by the drama of penalties. In the shootout, both teams displayed composure under pressure, converting their attempts with precision. However, the decisive moment came when St Thomas More’s goalkeeper produced a crucial save from Ignatius’ final penalty, denying what had been a well-struck effort on target. With that stop, St Thomas More secured victory, bringing an end to a gripping contest. Although defeat on penalties is always a difficult outcome, St Ignatius College's Senior Team can reflect with pride on a performance defined by resilience and unity. Coming back from 3–1 down in a final requires not only skill but immense belief, something this team demonstrated in abundance. This match will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most thrilling Catholic Cup Finals in recent years. While the result did not fall in our favour this year, the players represented our school with distinction, determination and sportsmanship whilst embodying all of our Ignatian Values as they remained gracious in defeat. For ​many of our students, this match marks the conclusion of their school football journey, and what a way to finish. Though the trophy narrowly eluded them, their efforts and commitment leave a lasting legacy for future Ignatius teams to build upon.

Visitation

As one of eight Jesuit schools across Britain, our community is proud to belong to a rich and long standing educational tradition. Jesuit schools in the UK share a common mission of forming young people who are “men and women for others,” committed to faith, justice, compassion, and excellence. As part of that community, we were deeply honoured to welcome the Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Britain, Fr Peter Gallagher SJ, along with Andrew Johnson, the Provincial Delegate for Education, for a special visit. During their time with us, Fr Gallagher and Mr Johnson toured the school, met with students and staff, and gained insight into our ongoing commitment to the Jesuit Pupil Profile and our work as part of the broader Province. Fr Gallagher also presided over a beautiful and inspiring Mass. We are sincerely grateful for the time, affirmation, and encouragement they shared with us.

Academisation Update

We are proud to have been recognised as an outstanding school in an Ofsted inspection in February 2025 with a GCSE progress score amongst the highest in the country. While we continue to deliver excellence in education, we are currently considering the potential benefits of academisation into a Catholic Academy Trust. These include but are not limited to: Improved teaching, learning, pastoral and spiritual development for each child through increased collaboration, challenge and support Increased CPD opportunities and career pathways for staff Enhanced collaboration and partnership across schools Increased savings and efficiencies at a time of growing financial and roll pressures Improved access to capital funding and ability to reclaim VAT on capital works Increased assurance that our Catholic Schools, which have been established over the past 175 years, remain an integral part of the education landscape in England providing education for generations to come Importantly, all of the other schools in Enfield that are currently considering joining the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust are considered either good or outstanding. This is a proactive and collaborative exploration, focused on strengthening our shared Catholic values and enhancing opportunities for all our students.

St Ignatius to be Rebuilt

A new chapter. We are thrilled to be able to share with you the great news that a brand-new school building with amazing facilities and grounds is going to be built on our current site. We were delighted that Bowmer & Kirkland were chosen by the DFE to be the contractors for the project as we feel, they have really tried to reflect our Catholic, Jesuit identity. They are hosting a community engagement event tonight, Thursday 17 July from 5pm–8 pm. This is an opportunity to speak to Bowmer & Kirkland and representatives from the DFE about the new building and the development of the site. 'Speak Out Challenge' Victory for St Ignatius

We were honoured to host the Jack Petchy ‘Speak Out Challenge’ regional finals here on Monday. The evening showcased the talents of 15 young speakers from schools all over Enfield whose journeys had started when they participated in workshops delivered by The Speakers Trust in their own schools. It was no small feat delivering their speeches to a panel of 7 discerning judges as well as a large audience and we applaud of all of the participants for presenting themselves so well. We are very proud of our Year 10 students who took part; Adam Ravatt winning the competition and Demir Seyranoglu coming third. Adam’s performance will now go through to the semi final selection day where the judges decide who goes through to the grand final in July where they perform to an audience of over 1000 people!

China Trip: Day 5 🇨🇳 Post 3/3 After Dinner, the groups participated in a Sino-British Friendship Social Evening. Year 9s were grouped together with their Language partners and completed their activities in Chinese. It was an enjoyable evening!

China Trip: Day 4 🇨🇳 Post 3/4 In the afternoon, we tried a range of traditional dishes for lunch. Students were shown how to prepare the utensils for a meal by Ms Li before digging in! Loads of dishes were new to students, further enriching them!
